Rabbi Isaiah Zeldin (1920 – 2018)

It is with profound sadness that Stephen Wise Temple announces the loss of our beloved Founding Rabbi Isaiah Zeldin. Rabbi Zeldin passed away peacefully at age 97 just as Shabbat entered last evening. He was surrounded by family at his home in Palm Desert.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 29, at 11 a.m. at Stephen Wise Temple followed by interment at Eden Memorial Park. Shiva was held at Stephen Wise Temple on Monday evening at 7:00 p.m.

We mourn the loss of our founder, our Rabbi, our teacher, and our friend. We give thanks for the incredible legacy he leaves behind and for the blessings of his many contributions to our community, to the Jewish People, and to us personally.

Rabbi Zeldin is survived by his children, Joel and Karen, and Michael and Terry; his brother, Bernard Zeldin; his grandchildren, Sivan and Igor, Sasha and Dustin, Oren and Noga, Gabe, and Noam; and his great-grandchildren, Eytan, Ilan, Alina, Liam, Stav, Evan and Ido.

The family requests that donations be made to Stephen Wise Temple and Schools to establish the Rabbi Isaiah Zeldin Rabbinic Chair to honor his visionary leadership and support the continuation of his legacy; or to Hebrew Union College to establish the Rabbi Isaiah Zeldin DeLeT Scholarship Fund to honor his abiding belief in the power of day school education and to support the preparation of a new generation of day school teachers.

Y’hi zichro baruch, may his memory be for a blessing.
