“Reish Lakish taught in the name of Rabbi Judah the Prince, ‘The world only exists because of the breath of children who learn.’”

—Babylonian Talmud Shabbat 119B

Today is National Children’s Picture Book Day, a day set aside to encourage adults and children alike to share their favorite picture books with young readers. First adopted in 1967 by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), the date of March 28 was selected for the annual celebration in honor of the birthdate of John Comenius, a Czech philosopher and theologian who is considered by many as the progenitor of modern education. Serving as an educator throughout Europe in the 17th century, Comenius introduced a number of educational innovations, including pictorial textbooks written in native languages instead of Latin, gradual development from simple to more complex concepts, and a focus upon logic rather than memorization, as well as providing educational opportunities for women and impoverished children.

To celebrate the day and its significance in children’s education, we invite our followers to choose some favorite picture books from their youth and share them with beloved little learners. We’d also love to know what you’re reading! You can send us a snapshot on Instagram @stephenwisetemple, #ChildrensPictureBookDay.
