Why Keep Kosher: Culinary Spiritual Mindfulness If mindfulness is being present and more aware of our actions, keeping kosher can be described as “culinary spiritual mindfulness.” Judaism takes the act of eating and elevates it from the mundane to the spiritual. When reading a restaurant menu or inquiring about the ingredients in a dish, every time we eat we are reminded of our Judaism and that God gave us Torah teachings about what is permissible to eat. The act of eating, then, becomes an expression of our Judaism and a kosher diet is an act of Jewish commitment for us and an example for our children. — Rabbi David [...]

8th Day of Hanukkah (Unofficially known as Leftover Latke Day. We hope you have had a meaningful holiday full of light!) Chag Urim Sameach! We hope these reflections on light have illuminated your week. As we reflect on the meaning of light, and our power to bring it into the world, we invite you to increase the light with our Center for Tikkun Olam Hanukkah Give Back Guide. Hanukkah has come to an end, and perhaps we will spend the next few days chipping away at the dried wax before we pack away the Hanukkiot for another year. Hanukkah has come to an end, and yet, we are still in the darkest days of the year. Days away from the Winter Solstice, this year’s darkness feels even thicker, full of fear and anxiety. Hanukkah has come to an end, but now we prepare for Shabbat. Even as our Festival of Light concludes, it is [...]

As we reflect on the meaning of light, and our power to bring it into the world, we invite you to increase the light this Hanukkah with our Center for Tikkun Olam Hanukkah Give Back Guide.  The modern day sage Leonard Cohen (z”l) wrote: Ring the bells (ring the bells) that still can ring Forget your perfect offering There is a crack in everything (there is a crack in everything) That's how the light gets in As we approach the end of 2020, there is certainly no perfect offering; I think most of us let go of perfect many pandemic months ago. Our cracks are exposed in messy homes and messy hair, [...]

6th Day of Hanukkah | Candle #7 Tonight View Hanukkah Schedule Chag Urim Sameach! For the Festival of Lights, we hope these reflections on light will illuminate your week. As we reflect on the meaning of light, and our power to bring it into the world, we invite you to increase the light this Hanukkah with our Center for Tikkun Olam Hanukkah Give Back Guide. Each year, as winter descends, Jews around the world gather around a hanukkiah, a candelabra that—when fully lit—will shine 9 candles out into the world. In the Torah, Aaron the High Priest and his sons were charged with the responsibility of lighting the menorah, and the lamps of the Tabernacle in the desert. In explaining the instructions, and the particular verb used, the medieval commentator Rashi teaches that the flames [...]

5th Day of Hanukkah | Candle #6 Tonight View Hanukkah Schedule Chag Urim Sameach! For the Festival of Lights, we hope these reflections on light will illuminate your week. As we reflect on the meaning of light, and our power to bring it into the world, we invite you to increase the light this Hanukkah with our Center for Tikkun Olam Hanukkah Give Back Guide. From the moment it was created, we—people—have been in search of light. From the moment we discovered fire, we understood the power of light. Light has meant power, it has meant hope, it has meant possibility, invention, and discovery. It still does. In Aramaic, the language of the Talmud, the word for Torah comes not from instruction, as it does in Hebrew, but from the word for light. Like a light that illuminates the path forward, our Torah—our text and tradition—is meant to guide us, showing [...]
