A Death in the Family
by Rabbi Josh Knobel

As an immigrant to Southern California from a rural community, I felt relatively disconnected from the palpable shock and sorrow felt throughout the city this past weekend, as Los Angeles grieved for the much-too-early passing of Kobe Bryant. I marveled at the profound impact experienced by so many, watching with curiosity as friends wept… as television and radio broadcasts eulogized… as journals and websites offered advice for coping with grief associated with his loss.

Z3 Conference at Wise Brings Over 300 Members, Guests, Speakers, Influencers to Connect on Israel
by Rabbi Ron Stern

It’s not every day that one is given a chance to gaze into the future but Wise’s Zionism 3.0 (Z3) Conference allowed us to do just that. Together with some of the deepest thinkers in the Jewish world we set the stage for the future of the world Jewish community. The next generation of Zionism envisions a strong and permanent American Jewish community and a strong and enduring Israel—it seeks to define the nature of that relationship so that both communities benefit from each of our strengths and shared wisdom. Participants were inspired, uplifted, and challenged to open the doors to a Zionism that embraces unity without demanding uniformity and celebrates the rich diversity of world Judaism. If you missed the event, please check out our web site for some more photos and action steps.

Streaming the D רeam: Reflections from a Virtual Wise Fan

Wise has amassed a number of friends and followers from all over the world thanks to our streaming worship services on Facebook Live. Those friends include Julian Brenman, a young musician and song leader from Pennsylvania who recently met up with Rabbi Yoshi at the URJ Biennial in Chicago. Eyes On Wise asked Julian to share his thoughts on being a virtual member of the Wise family.

Exuberant, intentional, and authentic are all attributes of the compassionate community at Stephen Wise Temple in Los Angeles, from which I have benefited immeasurably…without ever having set foot on the campus. As we say in Hebrew, נָעִים לְהַכִּיר, na-im l’hakir, or “nice to meet you!” My name is Julian, I am a high schooler, and I have the distinct pleasure of streaming Wise’s Shabbat services each week from my abode just outside of Philadelphia. I have a passion for synagogue life, ritual, and Jewish music, and since discovering Wise on the internet about three years ago, it has been a tremendous influence and light on my Jewish journey.
