It was a hot day. Abraham was sitting outside of his tent. He noticed three men passing by. He invited them to stay for a bit, offering them water and a shady spot to rest. But instead of bringing just water, he served them a veritable feast. According to our tradition, in addition to modeling the value of הכנסת אורחים – welcoming guests – Abraham also demonstrated to us the value of “ אֱמוֹר מְעַט וַעֲשֵׂה הַרְבֵּה – say little but do much.” (Pirkei Avot 1:15)

Dafna Presnell Memorial Service

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dafna Presnell, the Director of our Early Childhood Center for more than three decades, as well as the founding principal of our Day School. Dafna touched the lives of countless children, as well as their parents, through her passionate love of every child, her insight and sensitivity in guiding parents through their most challenging moments and, most importantly, through her deeply human and humane presence. She was the early childhood educator par excellence, whose warmth infused the very heart of Stephen Wise Temple in its formative years and over the course of our growth. Donations in tribute to the legacy of her work may be made to our Early Childhood Center or Parenting Center.

 Wise At URJ Biennial: Let Our Clergy Take Your College Kids Out to Dinner
December 6-10
Boston. It’s called the “Hub of the Universe” for a reason (Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes said that, not our Massachusetts-native Director of Communications). We’re sure many of our Wise members have kids attending some of the fine colleges and universities located near or in the 617 area code, such as Tufts, Boston University, Tufts, Boston College, Emerson College, M.I.T., or even Tufts! During the Union for Reform Judaism Biennial conference in Boston this December, we’d love to bring together a group of Wise students for dinner in Boston!
Email Lucy Harel, Director of Membership, to send us their name, email, university/college (or alma mater if they’ve recently graduated) and we’ll gladly invite them to our dinner party!

February 23-25, 2018
Hit the slopes with the guys of Wise! This is an incredible getaway for a limited group of Wise guys including Rabbi Yoshi and Rabbi Stern! We spend two days enjoying the mountains and snow of Mammoth Mountain, the services of our own personal chef, Shabbat, great camaraderie and some awesome skiing. Even if you’re not a skier, Mammoth offers great winter activities from snow-mobiling to snow-shoeing and we’ll have access to the spa and gym at the Snowcreek mountain center. Jewish musicians, from composers to instrumentalists, often see their music as a way to bring joy as well as a way to inspire living a deeper and more meaningful Jewish life. Join Rabbi Zweiback as he speaks with three influential Los Angeles based composers and singers about their music and the lessons they hope to convey. Julie Silver is a celebrated performer of contemporary Jewish music. She has sold over 100,000 copies of her CD’s and is a just released Reunion, a CD of original music (produced and arranged by our own David Kates).

 Museums with Mario

This is a rare opportunity to experience two extraordinary private art collections and to enjoy insights about these pieces from Mario Muller, Stephen Wise Temple’s Artist-in-Residence, who will help us to experience these paintings and sculptures through the eyes of the painter. The Weisman Art Foundation is a collection of modern masters including Picasso, de Kooning, and Ed Ruscha, all in a private home setting. We are fortunate that this private foundation will open its doors just for us.

#TheBigFill is in Full Swing
We are working with Save the Syrian Children, an organization started by Wise members Tamar and Phil Koosed to fill a giant shipping container with life-saving medical supplies and wishlist items that will be shipped to Syria. Following the lead of Israel’s government, we will help doctors care for innocent children wounded in the fighting. On Mitzvah Day our Wise kids will write letters and draw messages of love and kindness to Syrian children that they will read when the container is safely delivered halfway around the world.

Rabbi Yoshi Zweiback continues his innovative community studies with Holding Onto Hope, discussing the importance of tikvah (hope) in the Jewish experience. After lunch we will screen The Light Between Oceans, a drama exploring a wrenching moral dilemma. The deadline for lunch orders is Monday, November 6, at 12 p.m.

The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and UCLA Alan D. Leve Center for Jewish Studies will present the world premiere of “David’s Quilt,” an original libretto about biblical King David“. This performance features the premiere of a new work by Los Angeles based composers and UCLA faculty and students working together with the Max Helfman Institute. David’s Quilt is the result of 15 very different composers joining together to tell the story of David through their own artistic lens. The Quilt explores different episodes of David’s life, composed in a variety of musical idioms.
