The Surprising Power of Immersive Jewish Community
by Rabbi Josh Knobel

As I settled into my seat, one small chair among five thousand, I wondered nervously how my little girl would react to her first kabbalat shabbat in a conference hall, surrounded by thousands of Jews from across North America. However, as the cantor began to sing and the music began to play, I saw a child at once expressive and enthralled, her arms swaying overhead as she clapped enthusiastically alongside the familiar sounds of Shabbat.

New Album Alert: Mah Tovu’s “These Are the Things” Available Now

Mah Tovu (Rabbi Yoshi Zweiback and Rabbi Ken Chasen) have just released “These Are the Things,” their long-awaited third full-length album of original contemporary Jewish music. To celebrate the launch, the duo performed a dynamite set on the Jewish Rock Radio stage at the Union for Reform Judaism Biennial last week and the video for Kol Yisrael (We Are All Connected) had its world premiere in front of thousands during the conference. The new album features many tunes familiar to the Wise community, including the elegant and poignant “We Remember”, written in the aftermath of the Tree of Life Synagogue tragedy. “These Are the Things” is now available on all major streaming services and online at MahTovu.com.

Wise Stands In Support of Nessah Synagogue
Earlier this week, Stephen Wise Temple posted this message on social media in support of Nessah Synagogue:

Your sanctuary, your place of assembly, your source of comfort, the place where you affirm your connection to our people and our God has been violated. Our hearts cry out with you in solidarity and deep compassion over the upheaval endured by your community and, because we are united in faith, by all of us.

Memorial Plaques—Commemorate Loved Ones in Our Sanctuary

It is a widely observed Jewish tradition to commemorate the passing of a relative or loved one on the walls within a synagogue. All synagogues and many organizations devote an area within or near the sanctuary to memorializing those that have departed on a dedicated memorial wall. If you wish to commemorate a loved one by purchasing a memorial plaque at Wise, you may do so online or by calling our development office at 310.889.2234.

Project Moses Launches in Los Angeles

Project Moses, a leadership program designed to empower Jews with disabilities, is launching in Los Angeles and Wise is excited to assist the program in seeking inspired candidates. Participants will be talented people who may have mobility, vision, hearing, mental health, or any other disability and are seeking ways to make meaningful change in the world. Project Moses defines their leaders as Jews with disabilities who have a passion for Jewish leadership and who are adults of any age whose collegiate level academic achievement or equivalent professional, vocational, or volunteer experience already has given them meaningful skills. There are many ways to support this important program and we encourage all who are interested to learn more and apply.

Forty Years After: The Los Angeles Persian Jewish Community
Rabbi Yoshi Zweiback and Dr. Saba Soomekh

Sexuality  |  Wednesday, January 8, 2020  |  7:30 p.m.
Culture |  Wednesday, February 19, 2020  |  7:30 p.m.

The impact of the revolution in Iran in 1979 goes well beyond the Middle East and few communities in the United States have felt that impact more than Los Angeles. The Jewish community has been forever changed by the immigration of tens of thousands of Persian Jews over the past four decades. The influence has been mutual—both communities have been transformed in exciting ways because of these larger forces.

This series explores the mutual impact of the Persian Jewish community, the broader Los Angeles Jewish community, and the City of Los Angeles.

The Italian Jewish tradition includes 2,000 years of uninterrupted history. From before the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE, this community has outlasted the Roman Empire, and forged a relationship with the Vatican that has lasted for 1,700 years. The Italian Rite has its own music, not Sephardic or Ashkenazi, but unique in its own way. 40,000 Jews still live in Italy and thrive, honoring their history and the collective history of the Jewish People.
