Celebrating Adar, A Month of Joy
By Cantor Emma Lutz
This Wednesday evening, we mark Rosh Hodesh Adar, the beginning of the most joyful month on the Jewish calendar. Adar is known as the happiest time because our festive holiday of Purim falls this month. The joy of this both silly and meaningful holiday is meant to extend throughout the entire month of Adar, a time when we rejoice in our freedom as Jews, celebrate the heroism of our matriarch, Esther, and tout our ancestors’ defeat of the evil villain, Haman.

Become an Adult B’nai Mitzvah and Connect with Clergy and Community
When a Jewish person turns 13, they automatically become a bar or bat mitzvah, a son or daughter of the commandments. However, many did not have the opportunity or privilege at 13 to be come up to bima in a formal way. Becoming an adult b’nai mitzvah gives you the opportunity to seize this special moment in your life to be called the Torah. One can also become an adult b’nai mitzvah to mark a special anniversary or to honor the memory of a loved one. Connect with your clergy and with an intimate group of learners by becoming part of our Adult B’nai Mitzvah program this year! Our studies will begin this spring and culminate in a service in late 2018. We hope that you will consider joining us for this incredible experience. For questions, please contact Cantor Emma Lutz by email at [email protected] or by phone at 310.889.2270

Center for Jewish Life presents
How to Read the Bible
with Rabbi Ron Stern
Tuesday, February 20 | 7:30-9 p.m.
The most sacred text of the Jewish people stands at the center of our identity as Jews. For centuries it has been read as the revealed word of God and a source of history for our people from ancient days. Modern research and archeology are constantly providing us with insights that challenge the traditional view of the Bible by providing us with a rich context for understanding its origin. However, far from undermining the meaning and significance of the Bible, our expanded knowledge actually makes the text more inspiring by explaining how our ancestors captured some of their deepest ideas in this most complex text.
