Memorable Seders
by Rabbi Ron Stern
Last year, while officiating at the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles interfaith seder, in a room packed with dignitaries and politicians, I smeared a heaping pile of horseradish and charoset on a matzah and took a bite. Within seconds, my mouth exploded in pain. The horseradish vapors catapulted up through my nasal cavities and set my head on fire. For a minute, I thought that my brain might actually melt.

Wise Brings Parkland Students to Los Angeles to Meet with Peers and Inspire Change
It was a truly inspiring weekend as Stephen Wise Temple supported the kids and teens in our community in their efforts to end gun violence. Wise welcomed two special visitors from Parkland, Florida: Mia Freeman and Hayley Licata, both survivors of February’s shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School. On Friday, they traveled with Rabbi Yoshi Zweiback and Rabbi Melissa Zalkin Stollman (of Congregation Kol Tikvah in Parkland), visiting high schools all around Los Angeles, speaking to peers at Shalhevet, de Toledo, and Milken High Schools. Friday evening they shared their story with Rabbi Yoshi on the bimah during Shabbat services. On Saturday morning they joined our Wise shuttle to the downtown March for Our Lives rally and, after being introduced by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, spoke to the crowd of over 30,000. On Sunday evening they visited Teen Line, a support and outreach network for teens helping teens. During their time in Los Angeles, Mia and Hayley were interviewed on CNN’s MichaeLA show, by NBC, Fox 11 News, KPCC, and AM 1070. We are so proud of them; and proud of our kids, teens, and families, for supporting a call for action to bring us safety and peace in our communities.

The BFOR Study: Genetic Research to Save Lives
Wise is partnering with the BFOR (BRCA Founder Outreach) Study to help get the word out about some important genetic research happening in Los Angeles and other major cities around the U.S. Women and men with a BRCA gene mutation have a greater risk of developing several types of cancer, including breast, ovary, prostate and other cancers. Individuals of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry are ten times as likely to carry a BRCA mutation as the general population. Most carriers do not even know they are at risk. Genetic testing is performed using a simple blood sample.

You’ll learn their views on subjects including freedom of speech, death penalty, gender equality and more.
