 Proclaiming Liberty: Aspiring to the American Ideal

This week on our incredible mountaintop we’ve welcomed children to both Camp Wise and Wise Readers to Leaders. They are children whose parents were born in Iran, Mexico, Israel, Russia, Guatemala, Thailand, Argentina, China and probably a host of other countries. They’ve been swimming in our pool, playing in the beautiful Katz Family Pavilion, learning to become better readers, singing Hebrew songs, creating art that only their parents could appreciate, and enjoying the experience that only Stephen Wise Temple makes possible for the slice of Los Angeles that is our circle of community.

 Member Spotlight: Lauren Mannheim and Family
Lauren Mannheim’s history with Wise started in her earliest years as an Early Childhood student. Throughout her life she has been connected to Wise in deeply meaningful ways – ultimately celebrating three separate simchas in three separate spaces on our campus! We asked Lauren to take us down memory lane and she created this wonderful photo essay, sharing her earliest Wise memories at preschool, her Bat Mitzvah experience, her wedding, and wonderful photos from this year when her son Jonah became Bar Mitzvah. Thank you, Lauren, for this awesome look back at three generations of Wise membership!

Relief Supplies for Detained Refugees

As Jews, we are pained by the humanitarian crisis at our borders. Our own history of seeking asylum on the shores of this nation causes the suffering of those who are detained to resonate in our souls. We appreciate President Trump’s decision to maintain family integrity yet we still know that many families will endure long spans in detention while their cases are adjudicated. So many of you have reached out asking how we can help so we are informing you of one path: to provide relief and assistance to these incarcerated families, Temple Emanu-El of Dallas has invited sister congregations to send relief supplies which they will then distribute to the detained. To support the work of Temple Emanu-El and to provide humanitarian relief to families and children seeking safety in this country, we invite you to contribute toiletries, gently-used clothing, stuffed animals, children’s toys, and infant supplies to Wise. We will pack them up and ship them to Temple Emanuel. A large bin will be located outside the main sanctuary. Please drop your donations there. |

For the past two years, our extraordinary clergy, musicians, and singers have wowed audiences at Beverly Hills’ beautiful Beverly Cañon Gardens, performing an eclectic mix from traditional Jewish and Israeli music to pop favorites to last year’s stunning “Summer of Love” selections. This hidden gem of a venue has plenty of seating, lawn space for family picnickers, and restaurant patios for those grabbing a happy hour cocktail and nosh. Limited free parking is available.

 WiseFit presents Open Gym — Pick-Up Sports for Adults

Why should kids have all the fun? Stephen Wise Temple members are invited to play pick-up basketball in our beautiful new Katz Family Pavilion athletics facility. Bring your A-game and up to two friends every Wednesday night from 6 to 8 p.m. to show off your hoops skills. Open gym is completely free. Note that only persons 18 and over are eligible. Please wear appropriate gym clothing. Waivers must be signed upon entry.
Swimming: Do you prefer the water over dry land? We’ve got you covered! Come down to the pool and check out our WiseFit Master’s swimming program. This program includes guided workouts three times per week early in the morning.
