Here’s what you’ve probably heard again and again: gossip is evil. It’s said that three people are damaged when tales are told about another: the speaker, the listener, the subject of the gossip. That’s the lesson that our tradition has emphasized for hundreds of years. In fact, the rabbis maintain that “truthful talebearing” is no better than the purposeful spreading of lies about another.

Yizkor Book of Remembrance Submissions
Our Yizkor Book of Remembrance is a time-honored and meaningful way to remember your departed loved ones during this year’s High Holy Days and throughout the year. Submissions will be open from July 12 through August 20. We encourage you to make a contribution of $18 per name listed. This donation allows us to a printed version of the book for all who attend our Yizkor services. Please contact us during office hours at 310.476.8561 if you have any questions or if we may assist you in completing your submission.

Make A Difference During LA Family Housing Week – Aug. 13-17
Donation deadline: August 15

In honor of its 35th birthday, LA Family Housing is celebrating its efforts to end homelessness and empower the community to take action in support of homeless neighbors. Change starts here – and with you! Wise is now collecting items needed for “Donation Drop-Off Day!” Bring the following new toiletry items to the Sanctuary lobby by August 15: shampoo, bar soap, body wash, toothpaste, deodorant, razors. Also, during LAFH Week, you can take tours of LAFH’s brand-new facilities, volunteer with friends, drop-off your donations, and become an ambassador for this important partner in our tikkun olam work.

Voting is for the Wise
Casting your ballot is the single most important way that you can personally influence the policies and positions of our city, state, and country. It is the way that we, as a Jewish community, can make sure that our interests and those principles we uphold are represented. Are you registered to vote? Are your children over the age of 18 registered? Share this link with any non-registered voters. Make sure to register yourself. You can even register to receive a permanent vote-by-mail ballot if you have difficulty voting in person. Make your voice heard!

Stephen Wise Temple members are invited to play pick-up basketball in our beautiful new Katz Family Pavilion athletics facility. Bring your A-game and up to two friends to show off your hoops skills. Open gym is completely free. Note that only persons 18 and over are eligible. Please wear appropriate gym clothing. Waivers must be signed upon entry.
Swimming: Do you prefer the pool over the parquet? We are currently seeking simmers for a Master’s swimming program. Visit the sign-up page to let us know you’re interested and our staff will be in touch with details.

Melton School Opens Enrollment to New Audiences
Wise’s award-winning Melton School is proud to open registration for adult education classes to those who have never enrolled in a Melton course before. This groundbreaking program engages participants in deep learning and study with incredible instructors on a variety of fascinating topics. This fall, study Israeli Literature, Bereshit: From Adam to Abraham, or even take our new online class The Long Relationship of Judaism and Islam. Lunch Bunch: Caring for the Stranger

Help our Lunch Bunch care for the stranger by assembling lunches for residents at LA Family Housing’s valley shelter. Delivery of the lunches will take place on the morning of Wednesday, August 22. Your help is greatly appreciated, especially in the summer months when school is not in session and many are traveling.
