Honoring Lost Loved Ones
by Rabbi David Woznica
As we approach the High Holy Days I encourage you to set a date in advance to engage in an ancient Jewish custom; visiting the graves of loved ones. It is a show of respect and appreciation for what they did for you and an opportunity to fill them in on some of the dilemmas you face or even mistakes you have made.

Wise Readers to Leaders Wraps Up Summer and Prepares for School Year Programs
Wise Readers to Leaders has wrapped up another incredible summer program, serving 450 students (K-9th grade) from under-served LAUSD schools. Assessment results have shown that these students gained at least one grade level of reading because of the six weeks they spent with Literacy Leaders and Junior Literacy Leaders. Middle school scholars are reading at or above grade level standards, an amazing testament to their hard work and the work of Wise Readers to Leaders staff and volunteers!
The work doesn’t end there, though! During the school year, young scholars are supported by Remote Reading, a program that connects kids with a volunteer teen mentor for weekly reading over FaceTime or Skype. They also team up for community service projects and field trips. Interested teens can email [email protected] to get involved!

Responding to the Attacks Last Week in El Paso and Dayton
by Rabbi Yoshi Zweiback
Beginning on Saturday evening August 10, we commemorate Tisha B’Av, the day on which a multitude of tragedies befell our People. We traditionally read from the Book of Lamentations, an elegy for the city of Jerusalem in the wake of the terrible and senseless loss of life that accompanied the destruction.
“For these things do I weep, My eyes flow with tears — עַל־אֵ֣לֶּה ׀ אֲנִ֣י בוֹכִיָּ֗ה עֵינִ֤י ׀ עֵינִי֙ יֹ֣רְדָה מַּ֔יִם.” (Lamentations 1:16)
Dear God,
We are sorry.
We are sorry for the bloodshed, for the innocents gunned down in recent days.
We are sorry for the culture of hatred and division that we have yet to find a way of reversing.

Join us this Saturday for an observance of Tisha B’Av, a time to express our pain over the terrorist attacks in El Paso and Dayton. We will gather to recall our people’s history of displacement and tragedy and reflect on our tradition’s continuing imperative to welcome the stranger, end homelessness, and prevent gun violence.
