Everyone knows that it isn’t easy being a kid, especially in today’s world of busy activities, constant distractions and a growing list of responsibilities. At Wise School, students scurry from class to athletics to extracurriculars, gaining an incredible education but also occasionally needing some special techniques to avoid getting overwhelmed.

That’s where mindfulness comes in.

For the past three years, specialists Ian Hoge (M.A. Clinical Psychology) and Jennifer Waldburger, MSW, have partnered with Wise School under the direction of Assistant Head of School Pam Kleinman to create a culture of meditation and mindfulness. The results have been compelling.

Students have said they greatly benefit from the techniques they’ve learned with 70% stating that mindfulness helps them to focus and 88% responding that they’ve learned how to calm down and be present throughout the day. The vast majority of Wise School teachers have said that they’ve seen a strong positive difference in students’ abilities to settle conflicts and pay attention in class. Teachers have even noticed an increase in expressions of kindness among students.

Wise’s scholars aren’t the only ones benefitting from mindfulness training. Teachers and administrators participate regularly too, taking time out of their very busy schedules for guided exercises that help provide focus and clarity—essential coping mechanisms for the rigors of the academic year.

As part of Stephen Wise Temple’s expanded health and wellness options, mindfulness classes will be offered this fall, allowing members of all ages to learn the same meditative techniques that have helped so many Wise School students and staff improve their daily lives.
