As we approach the High Holy Days I encourage you to set a date in advance to engage in an ancient Jewish custom; visiting the graves of loved ones. It is a show of respect and appreciation for what they did for you and an opportunity to fill them in on some of the dilemmas you face or even mistakes you have made.
If you have children of appropriate maturity consider taking them with you. It’s important for them to see you, their parents, showing honor and respect to your loved ones.
For those who do not live in the same city, state, or country where your parents are buried, you might want to write them a brief letter sharing what you have done with the legacy they left you, and the sorrow you feel for their loss.
Visiting graveside is a beautiful way to prepare for the High Holy Days and will undoubtedly make your Yizkor experience on Yom Kippur all the more meaningful.
