It is with profound sorrow and deep regret that we share news of the death of a pillar of our Jewish community, Dr. Eve Kurtin-Steinberg, spouse of Dr. Michael Steinberg, mother of Beth (Sampson Glassman) Steinberg and Drew (Jesse Aguayo) Steinberg, grandmother of Lev, Liam, and Micah, and sister of Dr. Paul Kurtin (Ilona Szer), Jon Kurtin (Linda), and Todd Kurtin (Nancy).

Eve served our congregation in numerous ways, including as chair of the WPA, chair of our Financial Oversight Committee, and as president of our congregation from 2003 to 2005. Whenever Eve joined us for worship, she was a joyful participant, singing loudly and swaying to our beautiful music. Together with Michael, their generosity and leadership have served to strengthen Wise in countless ways.

Eve Kurtin-Steinberg

Stephen Wise Temple past president Dr. Eve Kurtin-Steinberg.

Eve has been a leader in AIPAC for decades, recently as the Political Chair, and helped create a vibrant AIPAC community at Wise. Her relationship with leading politicians throughout the country has ensured the unstinting support of this country for Israel. She has served on the board of directors of Partners in Care. She was a lifelong donor to the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, a member of the Community Engagement Committee, a past chair of Koreh LA, and a volunteer for School on Wheels.

Professionally, Eve held numerous positions in the healthcare sector, most recently as the Managing Director of Pacific Venture Group, focusing on funding cutting edge healthcare technologies.

Eve was truly a Woman of Valor, an Eshet Chayil. She was a leader, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, a financial titan in her professional life, a trusted advisor to many, a passionate social activist, and a true lover of Israel. The poet, wrote:

THE MEASURE OF A WOMAN
(by Summer Sandercox, with edits)

Not – How did she die? But – How did she live?
Not – What did she gain? But – What did she give?
These are the things that measure the worth
Of a woman as a woman, regardless of birth.
Not – What was her station? But – had she a heart?
And – How did she play her God-given part?
Was she ever ready with a word of good cheer?
To bring back a smile, to banish a tear?
Not – What was her temple? Not – What was her creed?
But – Had she befriended those really in need?
Not – What did the sketch in the newspaper say?
But – How many were sorry when she passed away?
These are the things that measure the worth
Of a woman as a woman, regardless of birth.
Eve truly achieved greatness in all aspects of a life tragically cut short while she still had so much more to give to her family, her community, and our world. Eve was loved by many, respected by more, and admired by all.
Aleha ha-Shalom, May she rest in peace.
