Stephen Wise Temple and Schools will celebrate Israel’s 75th birthday this year with Yom HaZikaron and Yom HaAtzmaut—Israel’s Memorial Day, and Israeli Independence Day. Every year, and maybe this year especially, we proudly celebrate the country’s founding ideals, rejoice in its existence, work to help it fulfill its promise and hope for its bright, peaceful, and inclusive future.
Below, you will find events, resources, and writings to help you celebrate and discuss Israel at 75 and beyond.

Israel at Wise
In these politically turbulent times, our clergy have offered words of hope and comfort. They have also sought out experts in Israeli politics and culture, who have shared their insights, opinions, and experiences, so that our community can better understand the upheaval in Israel. Here are just some of the ways that we have responded to the current political unrest:
- During Passover, Rabbi Ron Stern discussed the importance of the State of Israel as a fulfillment of the centuries-long Passover hope, as well as its founding ideals. He also wrote one of his Daily Kavanot on the centrality of Israel in the haggadot of the kibbutzim.
- Our Wise Clergy responded to the protests sparked by the push for judicial reform by Israel’s ruling coalition.
- Rabbi Yoshi recorded a podcast during his sabbatical with Rabbi Josh Weinberg to discuss the roots and nuances of the current situation in Israel.
- Our Center for Jewish Life has hosted two events with former American and Israeli diplomats. We invite you to watch Rabbi David Woznica’s dialogue with Amb. Michael Oren, former Israeli ambassador to the United States, and our webinar with Amb. Martin Indyk, a former American ambassador to Israel.
- Search for Meaning Podcast: Rabbi Yoshi and “Your Soft Landing” Founder Ariela Cohen Talk Israel, Aliyah, and Military Service.
