Preparing for the High Holy Days: A Jewish Guide
Rabbi David Woznica

August 18, 2023 | 1 Elul, 5783

Rabbi David Woznica delivers his sermon, “Preparing for the High Holy Days: A Jewish Guide” after the annual Board of Rabbis High Holy Day Seminar, put on by the Southern California Board of Rabbis.

The rabbis gathered to speak of their ideas and topics for High Holy Day sermons, and other issues related to the upcoming Days of Awe. With High Holy Day services drawing the largest crowds of the year for nearly every synagogue, there is a not insignificant amount of pressure on rabbis to deliver thought-provoking sermons. The angst, study, and thought that goes into those sermons, though, pushes clergy to think about Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur long before they enter their respective sanctuaries. In that study and examination of texts and topics, they prepare for the High Holy Days just as every Jew is supposed to prepare, beginning with the first of Elul, which begins the process of repentance.
