A friend of Rabbi Ron Stern’s has a mother-in-law who survived the Holocaust. When asked how she is doing, she responds with, “It was better in Auschwitz.” When he first heard this, Rabbi Stern was stunned: What could she possibly mean? How could Auschwitz be better than anything? Using the words of the prophet Zachariah, who said that Jews are “prisoners of hope,” (in Hebrew, asirey ha’tikvah) Rabbi Stern unpacks what that statement truly means.
