A Single Soul
by Rabbi Yoshi Zweiback
In 1971, by act of the United States Congress, the last Monday in May officially became the Federal holiday known as Memorial Day. Its roots, though, go all the way back to just after the Civil War when General John A. Logan, the leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a day of remembrance for all those who had fallen in the war to be held on May 30th of that same year.

Student Leaders and Adult Volunteers Honored by Wise Readers to Leaders for their Service
It is our extreme pleasure to announce that last week at a Wise Readers to Leaders event, Sheila Rosenberg was presented with the Summer 2016 Outstanding Volunteer Summer Award by 2015 winner Ann Ellenson. Wise School graduates Sammy Behar, Lindsey Rosenblatt, Lauren Yashouafar, and Riley Banton received the High School Student Leader Award in recognition of the outstanding leaders they are. They have dedicated their summers as well as a great deal of time during the school year to supporting the Wise Readers to Leaders program. Sammy was Teen Board President. Lindsey was the driving force and coordinator of the Remote Reading program – High School Volunteers read bedtime stories to our young LAUSD scholars via Skype or Facetime. Lauren and Riley were the organizers and supporters of every special program that Wise Readers to Leaders ran with scholars throughout the year. These exemplary volunteers and students who help Wise Readers to Leaders scholars are inspiring to the entire Wise community — Mazal Tov and Yasher Koach! To learn how YOU can have an enormous impact on hundreds of deserving Kinder-8th grade kids this Summer, come to our Adult Volunteer Info Session on Thursday, May 25 at 6pm. Contact Olivia LaViolette, Wise Readers to Leaders Program Manager, at [email protected] or by phone at 310-889-2254.

Are We Still Fit for Democracy?
with Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Bret L. Stephens
Tuesday, June 20 at 7:30 p.m.
For the past six months the American community and the Jewish community have been engaged in introspection and debate about the altered political world we inhabit and the challenges that America’s democratic system seems to be facing. Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Bret Stephens has been at the center of that debate. From his perch as a semi-weekly columnist at the Wall Street Journal, where he wrote for eleven years, and now at The New York Times, he has been uniquely positioned to opine on the challenges now facing American journalists and politicans alike: issues of immigration and refugee rights, free speech and a free press, and many other concerns across all political lines. Please join us for this insightful and fascinating evening with a powerful voice in American media.
This event is sponsored in partnership with Community Advocates, Inc., Jews United for Democracy and Justice, the Jewish Journal, Sinai Temple, and Valley Beth Shalom.
