The Light of Wonder Woman

by Cantor Emma Lutz

(No Spoilers! Note: This article contains references to the hit film Wonder Woman. As a courtesy for those who have not yet seen it, we wanted to let you know that Cantor Lutz does not spoil the plot of the movie in her message.)

When we were kids, my brother and I devoured our dad’s old comic books, delighting in the superheroes’ boundless bravery and their inspiring victories in the never-ending battle between the forces of good against evil as imagined by (more often than not) Jewish writers and artists.

Homes for Heroes: Beds Needed and You Can Help!

Did you know that there are veterans who are sleeping on the floor of their new apartment, if they’re even fortunate enough to have a new apartment. Stephen Wise Temple has pledged to buy 15 mattresses, bed frames, and bedding for our heroes. The VA can’t help them as there is no money in their budget at this time! YOU can be a hero too and help us fulfill our promise to get our vets off the floor and into a bed. They were there for us, now we can be there for them.

Wise Readers to Leaders Summer Volunteers Needed

If you can read this, you can make a difference! Join Wise Readers to Leaders this summer as a volunteer reader at Morning Mahalo. Morning Mahalo is a time for scholars to get excited for the day with group cheering and songs, to listen to a guest reader, and to hone their focus with gratitudes and a mindfulness moment. Morning Mahalo occurs from about 8:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and the reading portion is about 10-15 minutes of the session. We encourage our volunteer readers to bring an age-appropriate book of their choosing! Please call 310.889.2254 or email Olivia LaViolette, Program Manager, if you are interested in supporting the program in this capacity.

Wise School

Wise Wildcats Sports Banquet

On Thursday, June 1, we hosted the 21st Annual Wildcats Awards Banquet to celebrate the athletic achievements of our Wise School student athletes. This year, our Wildcats Athletics program boasts some pretty impressive accomplishments. An incredible 91% of students in grades 4-6 competed in at least 1 sport this year, and 72% participated in all 3 sports. In a highly competitive San Fernando Valley Private School League, 14 of our 35 teams finished their seasons as either champions or finalists in their respective divisions—simply amazing! The Stephen Wise Temple community is proud to support the Wise Wildcats. Yasher Koach!

Wise School’s Odyssey of the Mind Teams – Top 10 in the World!

Throughout the years, Wise School has sent many teams from our Los Angeles campus to participate in regional, state, and world championships for Odyssey of the Mind, and 2017 was no exception! This year, after winning first place at the regional and state championships, Wise School sent our 4th and 5th grade teams to the World Finals in Michigan over Memorial Day weekend. Working on both their long term and spontaneous problems, Wise School had an amazing finish out of over 850 teams from around the world.

Are We Still Fit for Democracy?

with Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Bret L. Stephens

Tuesday, June 20 at 7:30 p.m.

For the past six months the American community and the Jewish community have been engaged in introspection and debate about the altered political world we inhabit and the challenges that America’s democratic system seems to be facing. Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Bret Stephens has been at the center of that debate. From his perch as a semi-weekly columnist at the Wall Street Journal, where he wrote for eleven years, and now at The New York Times, he has been uniquely positioned to opine on the challenges now facing American journalists and politicans alike: issues of immigration and refugee rights, free speech and a free press, and many other concerns across all political lines. Please join us for this insightful and fascinating evening with a powerful voice in American media.

This event is sponsored in partnership with Community Advocates, Inc., Jews United for Democracy and Justice, the Jewish Journal, Sinai Temple, and Valley Beth Shalom.
