At Stephen Wise Temple, our summer Shabbat offerings are different than the ones we have from September through June. While Shabbat on the Trails and Mountaintop Shabbat take a break, Shabbat itself doesn’t take a vacation. We are excited to announce our very special Shabbatot in the coming weeks that will get you out, up, and on your feet as we take advantage of our beautiful Southern California setting.
Friday, August 19
6:15 p.m. | Gospel Shabbat | In-Person on Nahmias Plaza or Watch Online
Our special Gospel Shabbat will feature musical guests Rabbi Micah Lapidus—the composer-in-residence of The Temple in Atlanta who grew up at Wise—and Baptist gospel singer Melvyn Myles from Historic Ebenzer Baptist Church, the former pulpit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Along with some Wise musical favorites, this soulful summer evening will also feature a new composition by Rabbis Yoshi and Micah and wonderful new melodies from our guests.
The interfaith musical collaboration known as “Lapidus & Myles” began back in 2016, thanks to Rabbi Micah’s Civil Rights Movement homage, a song titled “Praying with our Feet.” The two have since produced a number of pieces, given a TEDx talk, performed concerts, and released an album, “Better Angels.” Echoing our interfaith Shavuot and Pentecost celebration this year, this evening is sure to be a hit.
Be sure to stay after for an oneg of coffee, tea, challah, and treats, with a chance to schmooze with our guests!
