Goals
The sacred narrative is a structure through which a community organizes and makes sense of its experience. It is our Master Story that we all share. Through a study of the key moments and issues of this narrative, a framework is presented to also explore ultimate questions: Why am I here? What is the purpose of my existence? Why do we suffer? What happens when we die?
Purposes provides the framework, key texts, and ideas behind the Master Story. It does not provide a single answer to questions, but rather through study and exposure to these texts and ideas, a firm grounding in classical approaches. By the end of the course, students should feel comfortable in reading Biblical texts in translation and participating in Jewish conversation on profound themes and subjects. This course follows the same “sacred narrative” structure, but it is expanded into thirty sessions and uses mostly primary sources. There is a heavy emphasis on the use of Biblical texts to develop key ideas.
