It is with immense joy and gratitude that I write to you as Cantor Lauren for the very first time.
While this is my first Shabbat in this new role, it is not my first Shabbat with you. During the 2022–23 school year, as well as last summer, I had the privilege of serving as your cantorial and education intern. I led worship, worked closely with students and families, and felt deeply embraced by this community. From my very first day on campus, I felt at home. Now, as I step fully into this sacred role, that sense of home only grows stronger.
This week’s Torah portion, Parshat Pinchas, includes a powerful and tender moment of transition: God instructs Moses to appoint Joshua as the next leader of the Israelites, describing him as
“אֲשֶׁר רוּחַ בּוֹ”—“one in whom there is spirit.”
The Hebrew suggests not just any spirit, but a deep, soulful presence—a person whose inner life, empathy, and energy are attuned to the needs of others.
The question is: what kind of spirit? What is the essence of this divine command?
For me, spirit-filled leadership means showing up with presence, purpose, and heart. It means leading not from a place of ego or authority, but from a place of deep listening, connection, and a genuine desire to serve. It means sharing in both the joys and the challenges of the community, and lifting each other up through prayer, music, and meaningful learning.
As I begin this next chapter at Stephen Wise Temple, I feel honored to join a remarkable clergy team and to work alongside Cantor Emma in leading this community. I bring with me the spirit of all who have shaped me: my Jewish and musical roots in Brooklyn, my years of study and service, and a deep passion for creating meaningful, inclusive Jewish experiences. Most of all, I come with a commitment to listening, learning, and growing alongside this extraordinary community. I look forward to the music we will make together, the stories we will share, and the sacred moments we will create.
I am so excited for what lies ahead and feel deeply blessed to continue this journey with all of you.
Wishing you and your loved ones a peaceful and sweet Shabbat,
Cantor Lauren Blasband-Roth
