“The Jews enjoyed light and gladness, happiness and honor.”
—Esther 8:16
As we prepare for the celebration of the holiday of Purim, our tradition offers us a welcome reminder to be happy, to rejoice, and to open our eyes to the light and goodness in our world. And to do so, we are given four official mitzvot associated with Purim that enrich the meaning of the holiday even more. We hope you’ll find an opportunity to celebrate at home or here with us at Wise:
- Reading the Megillah—We are commanded to tell the story of Esther and to hear every single word of her tale of leadership and courage. Come join us on Monday evening, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. for our Purim Games Night and Megillah reading.
- Sending gifts (Mishloach Manot)—While we have adopted the custom of sharing gifts with loved ones around Hanukkah time, it is tradition to exchange gifts during the season of Purim. Each gift is meant to include at least two ready-to-eat items. Our students in Aaron Milken Center have been preparing treat bags for family and friends as they learn about this ritual. Maybe this is the year you’ll try making homemade hamantaschen …
- Sharing with those in need (Matanot la’Evyonim)—Here at Wise, we always offer ways to give back to our greater community in many different capacities. In light of the recent earthquakes, we are again sharing an opportunity to support Save the Syrian Children, and our CYE students are also working on a joint service project with Leo Baeck Temple Religious School families to support LA Family Housing.
- Sharing a festive meal (Se’udah)—We hope you’ll join us at this year’s Purimland Purim Carnival on Sunday, March 5 at 10:30 a.m. for delicious food and lots of fun.Take an opportunity when you sit down to eat (or as you chase your kids and grandkids around) to introduce yourself to someone new.
Looking forward to celebrating Purim with you and fulfilling these sacred mitzvot together!
