One of the most meaningful ways of bringing God and Judaism into one’s daily life is to recite a prayer before eating a meal. For example, saying the hamotzi acknowledges that God is the source of our food and reminds us to be grateful. Eating, which can become a mundane activity, is now elevated to a religious act. If you are eating alone, then you might offer the prayer quietly. If you are with your family at home or at a restaurant, then take a moment to say the prayer together.

Imagine if a friend shared the memory of his or her parents praying before a meal – you would likely have a very favorable impression of them. Every one of us can create that memory for our children.

By offering a prayer at a meal we are reminded of God, of Judaism and our gratitude increases. It’s easy and it’s beautiful.
